Traditional brick-and-mortar retail businesses are facing challenges due to the growth of online shopping, the face of retail is growing exponentially in airports. Many major airports across the world have gone through revamps as it sees demands for luxury brands and stores in terminals.
Gone are the days when airport retail was limited to kitschy souvenirs and fast-food outlets, nowadays many airports have transformed into shopping destinations as well with the inclusion of things like upscale dining, spa services and luxury retail. Joining the bandwagon in redesigning its airports to allure flying passengers to an unforgettable shopping experience is Malaysia Airports.
The company recently launched its campaign called ‘Shop Like A Hero’ or in short #ShopLAH, which sees its initiative to redesign major airports in Malaysia from being functional transportation hubs into shopping destinations.
Think fashion avenues, and exclusive dining zones for example. Malaysia Airports is working to bring in a slate of luxury retail brands and dining outlets. In addition to that, Malaysia Airports will also launch its very own retail outlet named ‘Sense of Malaysia’ in the second quarter of 2020, said to offer an umbrella of Malaysian brands.
Exciting changes are already a work in progress, as passengers can see the transformations across Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Langkawi International Airport. There will be more planned in the following months for its other airports such as Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Kuching International Airport and Penang International Airport.
Not just limited to shopping at the retail stores, the airport is also looking to converge online and offline retail and this will see the implementation of e-reward programmes and cashless payment solutions. This of course comes after its assurance of free internet access in all its properties.
“Malaysia Airports’ senior general manager for commercial services, Nazli Aziz said: “Globally, retail concessions are the largest source of non-aero revenue and we aim to emulate that with our airports. The downtown retail sentiment is very somber but travel retail at airports continue to go on an upwards trend. So, there is mass potential for us to leverage on this.”
