The Gucci bag collection for autumn/winter 2019-20 sees the introduction of new styles and an evolution of several existing, established models of the House. Graphic patterns and new materials ring the changes, and a timeless grey colour makes its debut.
In the autumn/winter 2019-20 fashion show, a new Gucci bag was presented featuring a silk scarf wrapped around the shoulder strap. This elegant style in leather or suede, with a top flap, employs a gold GG buckle closure based on a piece of hardware discovered on a 70s bag in the House archive. Combining everyday style with practicality, this bag can be carried by hand or on the shoulder, and without the silk scarf have it offers longer leather shoulder strap allowing for it to be worn cross-body, adding useful multifunctionality. The colour palette is classic and dressy – black, red and butter are joined by grey, a timeless and versatile hue that is key for this season.
A vintage theme runs throughout the bag collection. A small, sophisticated shoulder bag has been re-imagined in dark green suede with red leather trim and a decorative gold chain, as well as a discreet Interlocking G detail with gold-and-silver finish.
A new interpretation of the Sylvie bag was also showcased on the autumn/winter 2019-20 catwalk. This is a completely a redesigned version of this style, with a fresh appeal. Two sizes of a new top-handle Sylvie are available in a soft patent leather in three classic colours: black, red and green. The main detail of the Sylvie, the chain hardware on the flap, has been reshaped to be thinner, an interpretation that takes inspiration from the House archive. A chain detail on the shoulder straps embellishes these two styles, enhancing their femininity. The patent leather gives a rich appearance and helps highlight the workmanship and expertise employed in the making of these pieces, while semi-rigid construction perfectly embodies the current boxy-bag trend. There is also a mini size in the same three colours, which can work both as a day bag and as an evening/cocktail option.
Another fun incarnation of the mini Sylvie comes in three candy colours of plexiglass: white, light green and a pop pink. This distinctive style is imbued with special fashion appeal because of the unconventional material used. Internally it features tone-on-tone leather details and an open pocket. Besides the thinner Sylvie chain on the front panel, the plexi-glass version also has a decorative chain shoulder strap – both gold chains (on the front and the shoulder strap) sit in striking contrast to the modern material used for the bag body.
Other developments include the arrival of a new key shade for Gucci, a pale grey. This colour, which is dressy, classical and easy to match with any outfit, will work across seasons in a timeless manner. It appears throughout the entire bag collection, but has been particularly used for a series of Gucci Zumi bags. Named for the Los Angeles-based actress and experimental musician Zumi Rosow, the Zumi combines two of the most historical House motifs – the Interlocking G and Horsebit – in a special piece of hardware. This detail, which mixes gold- and silver-coloured metals, is taken from a rare piece in the Gucci archive. Now, the Zumi is offered in the new grey tone in a variety of materials and shapes: versions in smooth and grainy leather, python, elaphe and crocodile are available both as a top-handle model and as a new shoulder bag. A Zumi bucket bag is introduced in white/grey Hardwick snakeskin, and there are grey wallets to go with the handbags, also in leather and precious skins (crocodile and python).
The Gucci Zumi bag also comes in a striped version, with diagonal bi-colour stripes on each side, enhancing the silhouette of the top-handle model and framing the iconic Gucci Zumi hardware: two sizes of top-handle Zumis come in blue smooth leather with red and butter stripes; the smaller size is also available in a burgundy option with white and cognac stripes. As well as these striped pieces, there is a bi-colour group of Zumi bags and small leather goods in rich, shiny python. Two sizes of python Gucci Zumis have red-and-butter bi-colour front and rear panels, with contrasting black python details framing the panels themselves. This is an elegant, opulent and fashionable interpretation of the current colour-blocking trend. The red-and-butter colour combination is also used for some lively small leather goods and a new bucket bag featuring the Gucci Zumi signature hardware.
The Rajah bag has also been re-imagined to align with the grey Gucci Zumis, so there is a maxi tote in this style in grey python. A large size of the tote comes in both leather and python/elaphe, with an unusual, fashionable Web-stripe colour combination: orange-black-orange.
To complete the Rajah offer, the popular shoulder bag has been re-coloured in beautiful grey and comes in python/elaphe or crocodile in this colour. Another special Rajah style is a striking maxi tote in velvet that is soft and light. This is in a rich blue/ivory Square G-and-cloud velvet jacquard, trimmed with black leather and embellished with a blue-red-blue Web stripe. There is also a regular large size of this model.
A large size of Rajah shoulder bag in black leather with olive green and cognac stripes has also been developed and was shown in the fashion show with a multi-coloured silk scarf tied on the chain shoulder strap. This Rajah is sold without the scarf, which can be bought separately to replicate the runway look. A regular Rajah shoulder bag also comes in blue leather with red and butter diagonal stripes.
A dressy addition to the bag offer is the Gucci classic clutch in envelope shape, embellished with the distinctive torchon Double G detail. There is a basic black leather option, and other models in four different colours of shiny python/elaphe (black, red, grey and butter). This style pairs effortlessly with evening gowns and is also suitable for any party or cocktail gathering.
For those looking to make a statement for evening, an envelope-shaped shoulder bag in blue suede with Rajah tiger-head detail, hand-embroidered stars in lurex thread, crystal drops and burgundy torchon shoulder strap with tassels is the perfect option.
