Maher Zain is a Swedish R&B singer, songwriter and music producer who launched to fame through his internationally successful album titled ‘Thank You Allah’ in 2009. His music genre consists of contemporary R&B but comes with strong Muslim religious influence. Maher Zain is widely recognised and have achieved most commercial success in Islamic countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. But he has planted a strong footing on the Internet, having drawn millions of views for his music videos on YouTube. His song ‘Number One For Me’ raked in 103 million views, while his hit song ‘Insha Allah’, collected about 83 million views while the tune ‘Ya Nabi Salam Alayka’ amassed an impressive 236 million views so far (and counting!). Sami Yusuf is a talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer and humanitarian who is British, but born in Iran. The 38-year-old gained popularity with his debut album ‘Al-Mu’allim’ in 2003, and has since performed all over the world. He has since released 9 studio albums, with hits like ‘Al-Mu’allim’, ‘You Came To Me’, ‘Hasbi Rabbi’, all of which drew millions of views on YouTube. Move aside Drake, and make room for Deen Squad! This is a Canadian hip-hop band consisting of Muslim rappers Jae Deen and Karter Zaher. They call themselves the leaders of halal hip hop, with an aim to empower, educate and inspire the youth through their music. One of the duo’s most recent single titled ‘Hello Brother’, a tribute to the recent New Zealand terrorist victims, was widely received with more than 490,000 views since it was launched on YouTube in March. Last week, they also launched a single, titled Ramadan rapping about well, Ramadan! Check out their music here.
Raihan, which translates to Fragrance of Heaven in Arabic, is regarded as one of the most successful Malaysian artists. The nasheed group paved through the music industry in 1996 and was originally composed of 5 members, but one of its founding members Azhari Ahmad died of a heart attack in 2001. In 2006, its lead singer Nazrey left the group. Now Raihan currently comprise of Che Amran Idris, Abu Bakar Md Yatim and Amran Ibrahim. The founding members have performed internationally as well across 6 continents, and was also invited by Queen Elizabeth II to perform at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Edinburgh in 1997. The group had also recorded 2 songs with Yusuf Islam, the British singer-songwriter commonly known as Cat Stevens in their second album Syukur. Most recently, they re-released one of their previous songs titled ‘Sesungguhnya’, featuring another Malaysian singer Alif Satar, and impressively garnered more than 2 million views in just a few days!
